Engineers Without borders had a meeting at the Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania in Israel before their expedition in April 2022 during which they met with Diplomatic staff in order to facilitate their mission.

During June 2022, the TZ team will visit Ambassador Alex Gabriel Kallua to inform him of their achievements and their future missions to come.

EWB's goals

  • Build two new systems in Tanzanian schools which will provide safe drinking water for more than 1,000 children and staff

  • Expand their work to a new area - Dabil

  • Implement and test new water collection and storage technologies

  • Assimilation of an expanded educational WASH program in the schools

  • Examine and maintain their six water systems in Babati District

  • Establish the new projects according to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the district authorities

  • Maintain and build new relationships with local & international organisations, as well as local authorities

  • Research regarding the construction and design of future projects

  • Conduct community surveys in the villages to better understand the challenges and needs of the local population

  • Examine the impact on existing systems

Their team

Engineers Without Borders is heading to Tanzania with a new delegation. 9 members from the Africa Group, Engineers Without Borders IL - Tel Aviv, have travelled for two exciting and busy weeks.

The delegation was split between two areas in Babati District, Nkaiti & Dabil, to implement their mission and goals.

Build two new water systems in schools

After mapping the specific areas in September 2021 where EWB' systems will provide the most value for the communities and students, Engineers Without Borders are thrilled to install two new water systems that will provide clean water drinking water to more than 1,000 children and staff.

Working together with the local authorities, they decided to build one system in the Nkaiti area, (where they have been working since 2013), and another system in the Dabil area - a new area for the project.

Opening a new area requires them a broad logistical organisation and will be an interesting challenge where the cooperation and the assistance of Ambassador Alex Gabriel Kallua will be crucial.

Numbers

Nkaiti: A 45,000 liter system will be built in Mdori Primary school, where 700 children, ages 5-16 study.

Dabil: A 30,000 liter system will be built in Sironga Primary school, where 300 children, ages 4-15 study.

Deliver an extended education program on water and hygiene

In addition to building water systems for the local community, EWB strongly believes that spending a significant amount of time during the year and during the delegation to deliver an educational program to the schools they are working in is equally important.

EWB is focusing on Water, Sanitation,, and Hygiene (WASH) materials, and technical understanding of the system.

Establish the new projects according to the MOU with the district authorities

it is important to us that both the local authorities and the community will be part of the planning and construction of the systems from an early stage. More than that, EWB wants it to be agreed upon that the community is the one in charge of the project. their previous experience led them to write the memorandum of understanding (MOU). The purpose of the MOU is to regulate the responsibility of the community in all stages of the project and it will be signed by the local authority and community leaders.
